Hummers Are Back In Town

We noticed our first returning Red-throated Hummingbird back sometime in March. But around the first part of July they were back in force. Here’s a picture taken by Ed (Edward A. Jones Photography) on July 4, 2012. It took a shutter speed of 1/1250 of a second to get a good look at this male red-throat.

Everybody Loves Disney

It’s been a long time since Walt Disney created the first of his films. The mouse that started it all (Mickey Mouse) has now been joined by such favorites as Woody and Bullseye from the Toy Story series. I seem to get more requests for Disney oriented cakes than any other kind. Even the moms and dads love them. Here’s an example of one of my creations, using a Toy Story Theme.

Attention to Detail

Katherine says, “I want my cake designs to look right with all the color and detail that my friends expect. Here is an example for a clown birthday cake that Katherine sculptured from scratch. “Sometimes, in order to get the look I am seeking, I will decide to artistically create my own design,” says Katherine.

Happy New Year

How about a cake for New Year’s Eve! Katherine’s Cakes came up with this NEW YEAR’S EVE CHAMPAGNE CAKE. It has a rock candy molded champagne bottle and white rock candy crystal ice set into a really scrumptious cake . Everything is edible except for the bottle label. Here’s wishing you a Most Happy and Prosperous 2012. (Click on the picture for a detailed view).

Buick Roadmaster

Along some road, somewhere in Kentucky, sits this prize Buick Roadmaster, with a sign indicating that someone could buy it — I don’t know how long the car has been waiting. Apparently no buyer has appeared. It reminded me of the car that Neil Young sang about (“Long May You Run”) during the closing of the 2010 Olympics. The car seemed a photographic opportunity not to be missed. I shot several images and stacked them together in a high dynamic resolution (HDR) approach. Here is the result.

Retired Dairy Barn

I will never forget the memories of being raised on a working dairy farm outside of Owensboro, Kentucky. It was a central element of our farm family life during the middle years of the 20th century. While exploring some of the back roads around Franklin, Tennessee, I caught a glimpse of this “retired dairy barn” with two artistically depicted cows — perhaps anticipating a day when their owner might return for another round of milking. Dairy barns have increasingly become “cow-less” as dairy operations have mega-sized and the family children have preferred to devote their lives to other things.

Autumn Wedding

For some reason, June continues to be considered as the most popular month for a wedding. Who knows what the reasons were “back in the day.” Modern day couples, however,  may choose to have a wedding at any time. The couple who requested one of “Katherine’s Cakes” chose to have an autumn theme: beautiful fall colors reminiscent of the changing October foliage. It was still warm enough to be outside. The wedding was held in a classic outdoor setting at Kentucky Lake. Here is a picture of their cake.
